About Stephen Elliott

I’ve been a student, practitioner, and teacher of Eastern methods for health, well-being, and longevity for 30 years. My passion has been to understand the inner workings of things…This includes Qi Gong, Meditation, Breathing, & Kundalini. I’ve been a student of Eastern martial arts for 44 years, including 10 years studying and practicing the martial arts of Japan including Judo and Aikido.

I migrated to Chinese martial arts in 1988, my first teacher being Shirley Choi, niece of Yang Cheng Fu in Ottawa, Ontario, from whom I learned the Yang Style 24 posture form. I learned the Yang Style long form from Yang Zhen Duo and Yang Jun during consecutive summers in Maryland. I became immersed in Tai Chi for 8 years thereafter until discovering Nine Dragon Bagua Zhang ( Eight Trigram Palm) under the tutelage of Sifu John Painter, PhD., Arlington, Texas. I moved to Texas and became a student and assistant instructor at Sifu Painter’s school in Arlington, The Gompa, from 1995 until 2004.

In 2004 I left martial arts due to injuries sustained over a long period and focused my efforts on understanding breathing, meditation, and Kundalini. In 1998 using EEG assisted meditation, I discovered what eventually became known as Coherent Breathing. The name and the publication occurring 7 years later with the launch of the COHERENCE website (www.coherence.com) and the book The New Science Of Breath, in 2005.

Having discovered the fundamental link between breathing and meditation, I went on to apply Coherent Breathing to my meditation, Yoga, and Qi Gong practices. During this “gestation period” between 1998 and 2005, I discovered the method for raising Kundalini via the classical (Kashmiri Shaivist) method. Understand that I had been ravaged by spontaneous Kundalini arousal since 1985 and had lived in a world of Kundalini induced psychedelia from 1985 until 1995 when I met Dr. Meng-Sheng, who helped me get the genie back into the bottle. Meng-Sheng and I met in 1995 and have been close friends and colleagues since that time. Of course, she is also my OMD.

Today I continue to practice Coherent Breathing and Wuji Qi Gong, both of which I now understand to be foundational to the classical practice of Yoga, Qi Gong, Eastern martial arts, and raising Kundalini. Note that Wuji Qi Gong is dependent on breathing “coherently”. So my discovery of Coherent Breathing ultimately led to my understanding of Wuji Qi Qong, which ultimately led to me to the quintessential Kashmiri Shaivist experience as outlined in the Shiva Sutras – which Kashmiri Shaivism simply describes as “dissolution” where one lives in a state of union vs. feeling like they are separate from the world. This is “a knowing” vs. a notion or conceptual understanding of the matter.
